What is Your Purpose?

Mark Twain famously said that the two most important days in a person’s life are the day they were born and the day they discover why. This timeless wisdom prompts us to contemplate our sense of purpose and identity. In this sermon recap, we’ll explore the impact of our identity on our calling and discuss how to find purpose in our lives.

Four Stages of Life Where Purpose is Often Questioned

Post-High School Years

After high school, young adults often struggle with their sense of purpose as they navigate newfound independence. Questions about career paths and life direction arise.

In midlife, individuals may face dissatisfaction with their career or relationships. This stage often prompts reflection and changes in an attempt to find fulfillment.

Empty Nest

Parents may struggle with purpose when their children leave home. Their identity tied to raising children can leave them feeling lost.

In retirement, many people lose their work-related identity. This transition can be challenging, leaving retirees questioning their purpose.

Three Steps to Discovering Your Purpose

1. Determine Your Current Identity

Identify your current identity, including labels you identify with and roles you play. Examine your behavior to understand your self-perception.

2. Decide Which Parts of Your Identity to Keep or Discard

Evaluate your identity and decide which aspects align with who you want to be. Let go of labels and behaviors that no longer serve you.

3. Align Your Behavior with Your Identity

Once you’ve defined your identity, align your behavior with it. Let your identity guide your actions and decisions.

Focusing on Your True Identity as God’s Child

To find true purpose, focus on being a child of God and align your behavior with that identity. Strive to reflect God’s character in your life.

The Importance of Serving Others

Finding purpose often involves serving others. Look for opportunities to help those in need, whether through your career, volunteer work, or personal relationships.

Finding purpose in life involves understanding your identity and aligning your actions with it. Seek opportunities to serve others and reflect God’s character. By doing so, you’ll discover a meaningful and fulfilling life journey.
