In the ancient world, gospel simply meant good news. It was a message heralded on street corners and town criers. Today, when Christians use the word gospel, they often aren’t sharing good news. Often times, the gospel is code for “you are a wicked and bad person.” Or, someone else might mean, “a religious hoop to jump through or a prayer formula for getting into heaven when you die.” The early Christians weren’t really thinking of either of these things when they used the word gospel. For them, it was a message of good news. Throughout this series we will explore why the gospel continues to be good news for you and me today.
